Today mattress stores are faced with rising costs and lower profits just like most families are. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when commodity prices (fuel, etc.) rocketed skyward, mattress component raw-material producers of: polyurethane-foam, innersprings, memory-foam, latex, steel, wood, fabrics, etc., hiked prices and passed those increased costs to all mattress manufacturers causing YOU to pay more at retail.
Then...
On July 1, 2007 the Consumer Products Safety Commission's new law (CPSC TB-1633) for fire-retardency, mandated all mattress manufacturers create mattresses that burn at a "certain" rate. Talk about a regulation that will cause mattress manufacturers to sacrifice increase product cost... Wow!
Through 2008, as fuel costs came down, the increased costs for mattress raw-materials & logistics had not worked it's way through the manufacturing-pricing "systems" of mattress manufacturers, and most materials used in mattress manufacturing are contracted & purchased months in advance. So when recession grips everyone in 2009, everyone is hit hard, and in 2010... It's tough for everyone unless your a Wall Street Cougar!
What does all this mean? Mattress prices at retail will remain high. No economic stimulus will come from mattress manufacturers.

We buy at the 'distribution-level' (BELOW WHOLESALE!) and then sell at various 'wholesale-level price tiers' to mattress-stores/resellers, interior designers, hotels & resorts and to the public too with no minimum purchase orders. Try no minimum quantity these days with a manufacturer and see where it gets you. You'll need quite a large truck!
